How To Customize Vista's Shortcut Icons easily.
Iconoid is a small program that helps reduce the clutter and confusion of the Windows desktop.
With Iconoid you can:

o Automatically hide and display desktop icons
o Remove the colored box behind icon text
o Automatically set the colored box behind the text to an optimal color for your desktop picture
o Quickly and easily minimize all of the windows on your screen
o Save and restore the positions of icons
o Insure that icons do not move when you change screen resolutions
o Save icon locations for each screen resolution individually

If you do not like Vista's default Shortcut overlays, viz the big arrows; you can, with the use of this small utility, tweak it. You can chose to have smaller arrows or no arrows.

Download the Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover from FrameworkX.
And, well, if you just don't like the arrow too, but would instead, like to replace it with a custom picture, I suggest you download WinBubble.
Microsoft InkBlot
WinBubble is another Vista tweaking utility, but this one has some special tweaks. The interface is simple and has tabs for Windows Customizations, Security, Optimizations & IE. A 'less than' 500 KB download which does not require an install. Worth a download ! Open the Customize Windows Vista 2 tab, and Customize your Shortcut Icon there.
In WinBubble, you can go a step further !
Open the "icons" folder of Winbubble and rename the icon "customize.ico" to some other name say, customize2.ico. Then select an icon which you would like to replace this icon and rename it as customize.ico, ensuring that the icon is located at the bottom LHS and of the correct/same size as the original size. Now open Winbubble. Open tab 'Customize Windows Vista 2' and from the drop-down menu, select 'Customize' and click on Set. Reboot to see the change.
