Unable to Hide Menu Bar in Windows Explorer

If you cannot hide the Menu Bar in Windows Vista Explorer, here are some trouble-shooting steps you may want to try. Please try one and see if it has helped you, before trying the next. You may have to try one or more and see which helps you.

  1) First Rt click on the menu bas and uncheck Lock the Tool bars. Then, click Organize > Layout > Ensure Menu bar is un checked.

  2) Click Organize > Folder Options > General > Tasks > Ensure Show preview and folders is checked > Apply > OK.
Additionally : Rt click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Performance > Settings > check "Show preview and filters in folder" > Apply/OK.

  3) Type gpedit.msc in Vista's start menu search bar and hit Enter.
Then in User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer, set the policy named 'Display the menu bar in Windows'. Click on Display the menu bar in Windows, then open its Properties box. Under Settings tab, if you see it as Not configures, select Disabled and click Apply/OK.

  4) Close all IE / Explorer windows.
Back up your registry and /or create a system restore point first. You can use a good 3rd party tool to Backup the Registry with a click ! Regback & ERUNT are 2 good freeware that I know of.

Open regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\
Under this registry key, you will see two sub-keys 'ShellBrowser' & 'WebBrowser'.
Go to the first ShellBrowser key and look for 'ITBar7Layout'. Delete this ITBar7Layout key.

  Hope one of these helps!
