Reloading Fully Vista's Half-Cocked Firewall !
The Windows XP SP2 Firewall works only one-way, that is, it only blocks malicious inbound connections. In Windows Vista, the Firewall is now two-way, ie. it adds outbound protection too ! Its like this; though Vista's outbound firewall is 'on' by default, all outbound connects that do not match a rule are allowed by its default configuration ! In short, even though the Vista Firewall outbound protection is on, it is not doing anything really ! If you wish, you can turn on the outbound filtering too ! But be ready then to make a trust decision for every application which runs to touch the network ! If Microsoft were to keep a database of known trusted applications, like other commercial Firewall's do, it sure would make life easier for the Vista user in this case
How to lock down your Hosts file !
Imagine clicking on winvistaclub.com and seeing a completely different Web site load in your browser; Or imagine clicking on Live search, only to fine yourself being directed to some other search engine ! Spyware can redirect Web addresses on your computer by altering your hosts file. this is referred to as the Host File Hijack.
The file's name is simply hosts, with no extension and is situated at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC. Navigate to it, Rt-click on it and open its Properties. now make it into a Read-only file !
I recommend you download an 'ideal' hosts file from MVPS.Org . Unzip it and replace your host file with this one. Then make it 'read-only'. This way your machine will be protected from opening malafide websites too.
To manage your Hosts, download and use this excellent small utility Hostsman .
Best to always leave Windows Firewall 'ON'.
A small tip! Even if you are using a 3rd party firewall, provided there are no conflicts, its always best to keep the Windows Firewall ON always, simply because it provides boot time protection ie. protection during that short period of time between when the network starts and a third party firewall fires up. Your third party firewall may not have the same ability. This can make the critical difference sometimes.
