| And, what is new in Vista SP1 ? |
| The specific improvements in SP1 can be identified across six key areas including: |
Device Coverage Continues To Expand
Steady Application Compatibility Progress
Improved Battery Life
Security Enhancements
Reliability Improvements
Performance Improvements |
| Notable performance changes included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1: |
25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
Includes improvements to Windows Superfetch™ that help to further improve resume times, in many environments.
Improves the performance of browsing network file shares by consuming less bandwidth.
Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder. |
|
| Notable security changes included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1: |
SP1 includes Secure Development Lifecycle process updates, where Microsoft identifies the root cause of each security bulletin and improves our internal tools to eliminate code patterns that could lead to future vulnerabilities.
Service Pack 1 includes supported APIs by which third-party security and malicious software detection applications can work alongside Kernel Patch Protection on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. These APIs have been designed to help security and non-security ISVs develop software that extends the functionality of the Windows kernel on 64-bit systems, in a documented and supported manner, and without disabling or weakening the protection offered by Kernel Patch Protection.
Improves the security of running RemoteApp™ programs and desktops by allowing RDP files to be signed. Administrators now have the control to differentiate the user experience based on the publisher’s identity.
Data Execution Protection (DEP) is a memory-protection feature available beginning with Windows XP and Server 2003. SP1 improves security with a new set of Win32 APIs to allow programmatic control over a process’s DEP policy. This will provide application developers with finer control on a process’s DEP settings for security, testability, compatibility, and reliability.
Improves the trustworthiness of data presented in Windows Security Center (WSC) by ensuring that only authenticated security applications can communicate with WSC.
Improves security on wired networks by enabling single sign on (SSO) for authenticated wired networks. The single sign on experience presents the user with a single point of credential entry rather than being double prompted for local and network logon. |
|

| SOURCE : Microsoft & WindowsVistaBlog. |
| Feb 3rd, 2008. It is being reported that, Microsoft has scheduled Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for release to manufacturer (RTM) on Monday, February 4, 2008. The OEMs will also receive Windows Vista Service Pack 1 during that week. |
| Microsoft will be deploying Service Pack 1 in two "waves". Wave 0, which is the one released on February 4, will only include five languages - English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese. The second wave, Wave 1, is scheduled for release 1-2 weeks later, and will cover all 36 basic languages, including Chinese. |
Windows Vista SP1 will provide key improvements on the security, performance and reliability of Windows Vista by providing :
All previously released updates since RTM
Performance and reliability improvements in core scenarios such as file copy, network browsing, and improved response time to resume from sleep.
Support for new types of hardware, and several emerging standards.
There are improvements to the administration experience. One of the most important changes we’re making is that BitLocker now supports encrypting for multiple volumes. |
| Vista SP 1 will also disable two common methods of hacking Windows Vista, namely the OEM BIOS exploit and the Grace Timer exploit. |
| To see what's new in Vista SP1 ! Visit WindowsVistaBlog. |
Make sure that your 'windows update' HAS installed KB935509 update which was pushed through windows update, recently, and that it does not show as 'Failed'. It is required if you want to install SP1 through 'windows updates'. Else one may have to try and use its stand alone installer. |
Windows Vista SP1 will support the following delivery methods:
Express. Requires an Internet connection but minimizes the size of the download by sending only the changes needed for a specific computer (approximately 50 MB for x86-based operating systems).
Stand-alone. Recommended for computers with limited Internet connectivity and for applying the service pack to multiple computers. The download size is larger than the express package, but customers can apply a single package to any Windows Vista version and language combination (within a platform). Distribution tools like System Center Configuration Manager 2007 use stand-alone packages to deploy Windows Vista SP1.
Slipstream. The slipstream version of Windows Vista SP1 is media that already contains the service pack, which companies can use to deploy the operating system to new computers or to upgrade existing computers. Availability will be limited. Microsoft will update Windows Vista retail media with Windows Vista SP1 slipstream media in the future. Slipstream media will also be available to Volume Licensing customers. |
For express and stand-alone deployment methods, Microsoft recommends the following:
Laptops must be plugged in to an AC power source.
A minimum of 7 GB free disk space on the boot partition, which contains the Windows operating system files, for x86-based operating systems and a minimum of 12 GB free disk space for x64-based operating systems.
The stand-alone deployment method requires administrative credentials. |

| Dec 12, 2007. Windows Vista SP1 RC has been released to public. One notable feature is its support for 'hotpatching', a reboot reducing technology. It works by allowing Windows components to be updated or patched, while they are still in use by a running process. Download. |
| Dec 06, 2007. The Release Candidate of Windows Vista SP1, is being made available from today, via Microsoft Connect, and tomorrow subscribers to TechNet and MDSN will have access to those RC bits too. In addition, the RC will be available to the public next week via Microsoft's Download Center. |
| Microsoft is targeting to deliver SP1 RTM in Q1 CY08, and it will collect customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date. |
| Windows Vista SP1 is an update to Windows Vista that, along with improvements delivered to users via Windows Update and via MS hardware and software partners, addresses key feedback from our customers. SP1 is going to be released in two waves. The initial release of SP1 will include 5 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese). The second release containing all 36 basic languages will occur afterwards. |
Windows Vista SP1 will provide key improvements around security, performance and reliability, especially around scenarios that are most important to end users and businesses including:
1. All previously released updates since RTM
2. Performance and reliability improvements in core scenarios such as file copy, network browsing, and improved response time to resume from sleep.
3. The installation experience is improved as compared to the beta. This is evidenced by higher install reliability rates, smaller standalone installer size, less disk space required for install and reduced install time.
4. There are improvements to the administration experience. One of the most important changes we’re making is that BitLocker now supports encrypting for multiple volumes |
"The size of the standalone installers have decreased significantly. For example, the standalone installer packages consisting of all 36 languages (x86 and x64 chip architectures) are smaller by over 50%. The standalone installer packages consisting of just the 5 languages (again, x86 and x64) slated for initial release are more than 30% smaller in size.
- The required amount of disc space for SP1 installation has also decreased significantly. Furthermore, with the RC, if more space is required to install SP1, an error message will now display exactly how much space is needed to complete the installation.
- Previous SP1 versions left behind a directory of files that wasn't needed after installation and occupied about 1GB of space; the RC includes automatic disk clean-up to remove this directory.
- Installation reliability has been improved based on bug reports and error codes reported from Windows Update (thanks, Beta testers!). Testing shows that these improvements have significantly increased the proportion of successful installations of the RC.
- We've improved the user experience of installing SP1 via Windows Update. During the Beta release, users installed without much guidance from - Windows Update. The RC now contains a series of screens with detailed information on SP1." WindowsVistaBlog. |
| For administrators managing Windows Vista PCs configured to use Windows Update but not wishing to deploy SP1 upon its release, there is a "blocker patch" that will prevent installation of SP1. Information on the blocker patch can be found at TechNet, starting tomorrow: |
Windows Vista SP1 is an update to Windows Vista that, along with improvements delivered to users via other channels, addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also continues to improve upon the IT administration experience. SP1 is not intended to be a vehicle for releasing new features; however some existing components do gain slightly enhanced functionality in SP1. |
| Dec 05th, 2007. Nagware Screen to replace 'Reduced Functionality' in Vista SP1. Microsoft has informed that it would scrap its Reduced Functionality Mode, from the operating systems anti-piracy architecture. "Although our overall strategy remains the same, with SP1 we’re adjusting the customer experience that differentiates genuine from non-genuine systems in Windows Vista and later in Windows Server. Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine...". Source. |

|
| Nov 29, 2007. Issues Vista SP1 will fix: Apart from a general improvement of Reliability, Performance & Compatibility, Vista SP1 is expected to specifically do the following: |
* Reduce of the number of UAC prompts from four to one when creating or renaming a folder at a protected location
* Improve by 25 % local file copying on the same disk on the same machine
* Improve by 45 % the speed of copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
* Speed up by 50 %, the rate of copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
* Improvement of compatibility with third-party diagnostic tools that rely on raw sockets
* Improve the reading time for large images by approx 50 %
* Improve the time to resume from standby for a particular class of USB hubs by around 18 %
* Improve the performance of user login on corporate PCs outside of the corporate environment so that it is comparable with login inside companies
* Addition of a password hint during the initial set up of Windows Vista SP1.
* It will resolve many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs in Vista, especially those involving Windows Calendar, Windows Media Player and a number of other drivers included with Vista. |
| Nov 29, 2007. Microsoft is looking to release the Release Candidate (RC) test build of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 to selected testers the week of December 1, according to sources close to the company. Source. |
| Nov 28, 2007. "I’ve been running Vista SP1 on a number of non-critical systems now since it was made available and overall I’ve been very pleased with it. I’ve been running Vista since the day that it went RTM over a year ago and since then the operating system has matured greatly, not only as a result of hardware vendors releasing better drivers, but also because Microsoft has been drip-feeding users updates designed to improves stability, reliability and performance. These updates will be rolled into SP1. It’s important to realize that these aren’t “blow your hair back” improvements, rather smaller, more subtle increases in performance. For example, bringing a system back from sleep is a little faster and more reliable, and the OS generally feels snappier... Just for the record, I’ve installed XP SP3 onto a few systems too and don’t see the 10% performance gains being discussed elsewhere." From zdnet blogs. Just to mention again; Microsoft has confirmed Windows Vista Service Pack 1 by Q1 2008. |
| Microsoft has released Windows Vista SP1 RC Preview to 15,000 testers as part of its private beta program, on Nov 14th.
Microsoft officials said the Vista SP1 RC Preview incorporates feedback from users that have been part of the beta program
that began in September. The new features include changes to streamline setup and installation.
Vista SP1 will include a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements but no new features, Microsoft said. More on it here. |
| Aug. 29, 2007, 9.31pm IST. Microsoft has finally confimed that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 beta will be released to a moderate size 10-15K audience in a few weeks. "We currently expect to deliver SP1 during the first quarter of 2008, but we will collect customer feedback from our upcoming beta process before setting a final date. Quality is our most important factor when determining availability." For the release of Windows XP SP3, the first Half of 2008 is being targetted. |
What is in the Windows Vista Service Pack 1?
"Windows Vista SP1 is an update to Windows Vista that, along with improvements delivered to users via Windows Update, addresses feedback from our customers. While SP1 contains valuable updates to Windows, organizations don’t need to wait to deploy and can experience the improved security, management and deployment benefits of Windows Vista today.
In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also continues to improve upon the IT administration experience. SP1 is not intended to be a vehicle for releasing new features; however some existing components do gain enhanced functionality in SP1."
|
What improvements are there to reliability in SP1?
"Windows Vista SP1 improves the reliability of Windows Vista in many areas. Thanks to the rich instrumentation capability of Windows Vista, we are able to understand the type of problems that our customers are experiencing (while respecting their personal information and privacy preferences).
Many of these crashes and blue screens stem from problems with 3rd party applications and drivers, so we are working with our partners to solve these problems together. Other problems occur entirely in Windows code so we are aggressively working to solve as many of these as possible too.
Some of these improvements are made available before SP1 in the August updates available via Windows Update and the Download Center.
What are some examples of additions to the service pack in the “Support for emerging technologies and standards” category? Throughout the lifetime of Windows, new hardware innovations occur and standards enter the marketplace. SP1 includes support for some of these new innovations, which are expected to become increasingly important in the coming years. For example:
-With SP1, Windows Vista can boot via EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) on an x64 machine
· SP1 supports ExFAT, a new file format that will be used in flash memory storage and consumer devices
- Support for SD Advanced DMA Support to improve transfer performance and decrease CPU utilization is part of SP1
- SP1 includes a series of new API's and software features to enable 3D application and game developers to make more complete and efficient use of the upcoming generation of graphics Direct3D 10.1 hardware
- Windows Vista SP1 includes SSTP (Secure Sockets Tunnel Protocol), a remote access VPN tunneling protocol that will be part of Microsoft’s RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Service) platform. SSTP helps provide full-network VPN remote access connections without some of the challenges that other VPN tunnels face traversing NAT, web proxies, and firewalls." |
What are some examples of additions to the service pack in the “Improve management experience” category?
"SP1 improves the administration experience. For example:
-With Windows Vista SP1, BitLocker Drive Encryption has been enhanced to not only fully encrypt the entire Windows Vista volume but also any or all additional locally created data volumes. (Customers can now not only fully encrypt C: but also D: and E:)
-SP1 Improves printer management by addressing problems associated with printing to a local printer from within a Terminal Server session
-Network Diagnostics in Windows Vista SP1 will help users with the most common file sharing problems, in addition to basic problems already supported
-SP1 includes an update to Disk Defragmenter so administrators can control which volumes the disk defragmenter runs on."
|
| "Additionally, the tools used to manage Group Policy for Windows Vista will change with the installation of Windows Vista Service Pack 1. GPMC will be uninstalled with Service Pack 1 and GPEdit will default to Local Group Policy editing. Following these changes, SP1 users can download an updated version of GPMC that contains much requested functionality including the ability to add comments to GPOs or individual settings, to search for specific GP settings, and to use Starter GPOs which encapsulate best practices." |
|
What languages will Windows Vista SP1 include?
"SP1 is going to be released in two waves. The initial release of SP1 will include 5 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese). A Service Pack containing all 36 of the languages (including the original 5) will be released about 3 months later." |
What drivers are new in SP1?
"Windows Vista SP1 does not include new drivers. Rather, new drivers are delivered to users via Windows Update or directly from the driver vendor. There are two benefits to doing it this way:
-Drivers can be delivered when they are available, and not just with the service pack
-Via WU, drivers are only delivered to PCs which need those drivers, which help keep the size of the service pack from growing." |
| How large will the Service Pack 1 be?
"The Beta of Windows Vista SP1 will be approximately 50 MB when delivered over Windows Update (to 32-bit PCs). We expect that will be the experience for the majority of our users. For IT Departments in large organizations, we also provide the “Standalone Package”. It will be significantly larger in size (about 1 GB for 32-bit), as it includes more just the changed files between Windows Vista Gold and Windows Vista SP1 as well as all 36 languages.
There are three changes to how the standalone Service Pack is built in Windows Vista which are responsible for its larger size. However, these changes also bring benefits to IT professionals.
-For the first time ever, the “standalone” package includes every language that Windows is released in. This increases the size but adds the benefit that the same package can be used to apply SP1 on any Windows Vista computer in an organization, regardless of language.
-Additionally, updating in Windows Vista is now “component based.” This means that if a file is changed, the entire component, including some files that may not been changed, is included in the standalone pack. This is a departure from previous versions of Windows, where the basic unit of updating was a file, not a component. A component is made up of multiple files." |
Aug 12th, 2007. The Windows Vista SP1 is analysed in-depth here at apcmag. |
| Also, from what is being reported on the net, elsewhere, there are no planned major user-interface enhancements, fixes or even polishes for Vista SP1. Two small UI tweaks to expect is a refreshed “NO GUI” boot splash & volume sliders. This screen is the same screen as the one which you see after 'hibernation'. |
|
There is also a new process being noticed : ReclaimWatchdog Service.
File transfer (Copy-Cut/Paste) speed has, without a doubt, been improved. |
| Aug 5th, 2007. Both Vista SP1 XP SP3 beta's have been released by Microsoft to it's beta testers. |
|
Vista SP1 build string is : 6001.16549. XP SP3 build string is : 5.1.2600.3180 |
| It is also reported that currently Vista SP1 is being tested with the full ISO and the 32bit ISO size is 3.07GB and 4.3GB for the 64bit editions. XP SP3 comes with less than 300MB size and consists of more than 300 hot fixes, some of which has already been resolved in post SP2 hot fixes. |
| A Vista SP1 build 6429 has also surfaced. this is in all probability a SP1 build of Vista in the Multimedia Branch! |
| While consumers and corporates, often wait until a "Service Pack" is released before upgrading to any new OS; assuming that the first generation of a release isn't fully ready, Microsoft has been pleading with consumers to not wait for SP1 but adopt Vista right away ! Microsoft has admitted , in an email to the press, that 'some customers may be waiting to adopt Windows Vista because they've heard rumors about device or application compatibility issues, or because they think they should wait for a service pack release.' |
| Usually an SP is considered as an opportunity to fix vulnerabilities, upgrade the usefulness, efficiency or functionality of components, and sometimes even add new features. But this time Microsoft has also agreed to make changes to the design and function of Windows Vista in the area of desktop search, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The company will fold the changes into a beta version of a Service Pack software update by the end of the year, and will give computer makers the option to install non-Microsoft desktop search applications, said the person, who requested anonymity because the report had not been released. |
| |
| This Service Pack was expected to include an entirely new kernel (the root code of the operating system) that will bring it into line with its more secure big sister Windows Server, when the next version of that, is released at the same time. |
| |
| 8th July, 2007. OK, It’s official now ! Microsoft is set to deliver Beta 1 of Vista SP1 in mid-July. |
| Microsoft is expected to emphasize that SP1 is more about fixes than new features. Most of the elements of SP1 are expected to enhance or supplment features that are already part of Vista, sources said. |
In addition to desktop-search modifications, here’s a list of other fixes likely to make it in:
* Performance tweaks lessening the amount of time it takes to copy files and shut down Vista machines
* Improved transfer performance and decreased CPU utilization via support for SD Advanced Direct Memory Access (DMA)
* Support for ExFat, the Windows file format for flash memory storage and other consumer devices
* Improvements to BitLocker Drive Encryption to allow not just encryption of the whole Vista volume, but also locally created data volumes
* The ability to boot Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) on an x64 machine
* Improved success rate for firewalled MeetingSpace and Remote Assistance connections. Source. |
