The User Account Control in Vista,

Revere it or Revile it ! But you just can ignore Vista's stare-in-the-face feature, lovingly called as the UAC !

Do something and you have the UAC popping up irritatingly in your face. Well, its a Security Feature actually, (but then again you had Mark Russinovich, a Technical Fellow in Microsoft's Platform and Services Division saying that the UAC was not a security feature!), and a good one at that ! Any change to the system is closely monitored by it. With this you learn to avoid installing potentially risky software or if some application is try to install itself or trigger any action, you are warned ! Also, if you perform a task requiring administrative privileges, while logged on with an admin account, you are asked for permission.

So which are the actions which trigger the UAC prompt.
1. Install/Uninstall of applications
2. Changing Firewall settings
3. Installing Drivers & ActiveX controls
4. Installing/Configuring Windows Update
5. Adding/Removing/Changing user accounts/types
6. Accessing, Viewing or Changing another User’s files & folders
7. Configuring Parental Controls
8. Running the Task Scheduler
9. Restoring back-up system files
10.And even while changing UAC settings.

The UAC seems to have replaced the BSOD in the crown for the unpopularity charts. And though I do not advice it, should you wish to Disable UAC, you can do so simply as follows :

Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Click Turn User Account Control Off > Click yes again (!) to the UAC prompt > Clear the check box > Click OK. Reboot.
But here is ONE UAC Prompt, I can assure you, that you will NEVER see !

TweakUAC is an excellent utility which you should try.
How to Disable UAC for certain applications only.
While you may not want to disable the UAC prompts for the whole computer, you may want to disable it for certain applications. Using the tool and steps below, you can disable the UAC prompts for one or more specific applications which you trust. This will NOT disable the User Acount Control feature for the whole Vista computer.

1) Download and install the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0.

2) In the Start menu, locate the new folder. Find the shortcut icon for Compatibility Administrator. Right click it and clik Run as administrator.

3) In the left hand pane, right-click on the database under Custom Databases and select Create New, and select Application Fix.

4) Enter the name and other details of the application you want to alter behavior on and then browse to it to select it. Click Next.

5) Click Next until you are in the Compatibility Fixes screen.

6) On the Compatibility Fixes screen, find the item RunAsInvoker, and check it.

7) Click Next and then Finish.

8) Select File and Save As. Save the file as a filename.SDB type file in a directory you will easily find it.

9) Copy the <filename>.sdb file to the Vista computer you want to alter the elevation prompt behavior on.

10) Click Start>All Programs>Accessories. Right click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.

11) Run the command below:

sdbinst <path>\<filename>.sdb

For example, if you saved the .SDB file as abc.sdb in the c:\Windows folder, the command should be like this:

sdbinst c:\windows\abc.sdb

It should prompt: Installation of <name> complete.
