Windows 7 Release Date : All Smoke, No Fire !

April 6th, 2008. I hate to spoil the party again, but was Bill Gates really talking about the Windows 7 release date?

Read the CNet Blog Post again; this time carefully.

Statement 1: In response to a question about Windows Vista, Gates, speaking before the Inter-American Development Bank here, said: "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version."

The question was about Windows Vista. A new version of which OS was he referring to, then ? Its not clear. If at all he was talking about Windows 7, at most an early test geared toward developers is conceivable ! And how do you interpret 'or so' ?

Statement 2: Referring to Windows 7, the code name for the next full release of Windows client software, Gates said: "I'm super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways."

Now this statement clearly talks about his enthusiasm for Windows 7. And its understandable. A company will HAVE to be enthusiastic about any new product that it plans to offer.

These two statements, on the basis of which the net is abuzz with conclusions, interpretations & conjecture, appear to have been clubbed and quoted out of context of each other.
I have tried to search for the original version where I could have read the full interview, and not just these two statements, quoted out of context ! But I have only come across only the CNet Blog Post & Reuters as the most quoted sources. And if these are all that there is, then no, I don't think it is not what is being made out to be !

As was communicated to WinVistaClub earlier, Microsoft still today, continues to stand by its official position that the company expects to ship the successor to Vista roughly three years from Vista's General Availability.

The official timeline is 2010. I wont be surprised if it goes up to 2011. But I don't think Microsoft would like to rush into things ... again ! It just cant afford to make mistakes; Real or Perceived !!!

Really, the charade and infatuation about Windows 7 Release date has now truly gone overboard !
